About all the Bush-bashing around 2003-2004: Clearly I was wrong to condemn the man and his administration. The Iraq-invasion was fully justified (and over in just a couple of months!), Bush was an intelligent and poignant man, surrounded by brilliant and charismatic people like Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney. And in no way have the actions after 9/11 further alienated the western and the muslim world.

Just as obvious now it is to me that Fox and their ilk are right about damning Obama for every action he does, including dating his wife (taxpayer money! They should be used for war, god dammit!). He is satan and armageddon is near. BTW: Shoot the abortion doctors before God gets to them.

Heres a nice little subject with absolutely no controversial potential:

A study conducted in 18 countries conludes that the proportion of murder, veneral disease and abortions in a given society, is closely connected to the number of religious people in that society. The more religious people you have, the worse it gets.

And before you go for my jugular: These results are published by scientist Gregory S. Paul in the Journal of Religion and Society. His research indicates that modern democracies where a large part of the population is religious, have more social problems than societies that are largely agnostic/atheist.

Japan, the Scandinavian countries and France come out of the comparison with good results, being countries with relaxed and pragmatic attitudes towards religion. We have comparatively few social problems.

On the other side of the spectrum: USA.

Note this: None of the countries in the study are Islamic. All were christian, apart from Japan. (Note 2: Not meant as a christianity vs islam debate).

So, what do we think of the proven overrepresentation of black people in the American prison system? Is it racist or coincidence? And how come it is that way? :?

(I\'ve read my fair share about this, but I\'ll hold my word vomit until the bucket is about half full. Call me sick, but I like how my word vomit clashes with others and splashes up all over the bucket, making others that much sicker in the process. Yummy!)

Let\'s take world war 2, arguably the japanese people could\'ve been labelled evil and thus invite evil: atomic bomb. This poll can potentially cover a lot of subjects. I thought it would make a good discussion at the least.

The death of MG Rover

For those that don\'t know, one week ago, MG Rover went into administration and today the administrators announced that Rover, a Birmingham car manufacturing giant for 100 years is dead. With 5000 redundancies announced.

What this is another example of is corporate greed killing a company... in this case JOHN TOWERS, CEO of Rover. For the past 12months, merger talks with China\'s state owned car company have been underway to safe guard the future of Rover after BMW stripped them of all their assets 5 years ago. When the talks ran into trouble the Government got involved and have tried everything possible in order to get the deal to be made however, this failed. Tony Blair even went to the extreme of ringing the leader of China to ask him to help and intervene... he refused.

China pulled out of the deal after they saw the books of Rover and saw what a poor state they were in. However, since this has been revealed more information has come to light.... technically China have not needed to merge with rover after what TOWERS has done... he has sold the BLUEPRINTS to the Rover 25 and 75 to them before merger talks had been concluded. The 25 and 75 series are Rovers biggest selling models. And now, China can build them with no need for Rover. Also, it has been revealed that TOWERS has taken 10\'s of millions of money from Rover leaving them in the financial trouble.

It is another example of CEO\'s greed grabbing more money resulting in the company and THOUSANDS of lives being destroyed. Should company bosses be allowed to do this? Should legislation be brought in to put a maximum cap on the income of a CEO regardless of the income of the company? Should TOWERS be hung out to dry?

Kudos to the government, after trying their best to get the deal made including a loan... they gave money to the administrators to help them find a buyer for the floundering Rover. Now that the company is dead, Advantage West Midlands have set-up a task force to find new jobs/training for the poor families effected. Also the Government have announced a ?150-million aid package for the 5000 workers to help them.

Personally, I think TOWERS should be fed to the wolves and forced to use his millions to support/help his workforce and then have a nice long prison sentance. Gordon Brown, has already said he personally launching an investigation into his actions. Regardless of all this, I am still buying an MG ZR as the first car I actually own.

Goodafternoon All,

As we all know, gas prices are raising everywhere and it effects nearly everything. Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are the only OPEC nations that aren\'t shipping out their oil at full capacity. This has a lot to do with China demanding an extra 12% of oil last year. India is right behind them in the demand for oil. Since we are competing on oil barrel prices gas will continue to rise for a lil while. We were discussing this in my Macroeconomics class. It seems a lot of people are quick to blame the Bush administration or the war on terror. Neither have anything to do with the gas increase we are facing today. At the peak of summer it will be an average of $2.50 a gallon for regular, nearly $3.00 for premium. Here in the US I believe we only have 3 oil refineries, In Texas, Louisiana, and Oregon I believe. The demand puts a lot of stress on those refineries, especially since no other state wants one of them in there backyard for environmental purposes. There is also a shortage of oil tankers to meet world oil shipment demands , more are being built, but the drydocks available are being used to construct cruise lines and other shipping vessels as well. With all this going on I see why our government got the green light to drill in the Alaskin oil reserves. I just hope that the competition doesn\'t escalate to the point of real war for oil.

Euthanasia (follow-up on \"The Terri Schiavo Thing\")

Okay, since most of the stuff on the Schiavo case has been said, I found it best to start a new thread to discuss the broader subject - euthanasia. Below is the last post of the other thread.

Sgt. Boomer Wrote:I don’t doubt Terri’s parents have tried some character assassination on Michael, but he’s certainly made it easy and I don’t think they’ve stretched the truth. Whether he tried to kill her is obviously speculation, though it wouldn’t be the first time someone has gotten away with murder. At any rate I think they’ve made the point that her life shouldn’t be in his hands.

From what I’ve read, they’ll keep her heavily sedated as they starve her so she probably won’t feel any pain. But if you tried to kill a dog, or a convict, that way you’d be in jail so fast it would make your head spin.

Saying you wouldn’t want to live like that – now, while you have all your faculties – is rather irrelevant. It would be like asking someone if they wanted to go on living with fleas, sleeping on the floor, licking themselves, and eating dog food. If that someone was a person, they would say no. If that someone was a dog they’d think they had it pretty good.

As I said before, it’s impossible to know what Terri wants, and odds are pretty good she’s too brain damaged to know either. It’s also very certain that Michael’s motivations are suspect – and I’m being understated here, there’s a lot more info on him if you’re still not convinced.

The question of euthanasia in this specific case is clear-cut, and it’s outrageous that the courts have made the rulings they have. There is a huge difference between unplugging a machine that keeps body functions going after the person is clearly brain-dead and deliberately killing someone because they need some help to survive. I don’t remember the public rallying support to unplug Christopher Reeve’s ventilator. When Reeve was given the choice to die, he chose to live.

As for the question of euthanasia generally, I’m against it in principle (but I suppose I’m resigned to democratic compromise  ). I also believe in the “slippery slope”, and “please kill me” could quickly turn into “please don’t kill me”, like the cards they have now in Holland (If you have time, read this article : Right to die turns into 'duty'). And it seems like it’s headed in that direction with Terri. It should not be up to a small group of people to decide what is an acceptable quality of life, and to have the power to kill you if- in their judgement- you don’t meet that standard.

I read the article that was mentioned: it\'s little news, more of an over-opinionated piece of journalism. Nothing wrong with that, of course, that\'s what I\'m good at too

Anyway, I\'ll hold my peace on this until more of you have formed an opinion.

First of all before I write this post I do not want this thread deteriorating into a EU vs USA thread or I will ask for it to be deleted!

Since the late 1970\'s, both Boeing and Airbus have been subsidised by their respective governments to help boost profits due to the heavy cost of developing passenger airliners. Until recently, Boeing have been the un-disputed leaders in the airliner market with a greater than 50% share of the market compared to Airbus.

However, over the past 6 years, Airbus have grown in strength and market share and now, it is Boeing with the less than 50% share of the market and Airbus becoming the world leaders in the airliner market. With the advent of Boeings 787 and the new super Jumbo, the Airbus A380, this market lead is already growing larger (A380 has many more orders than the 787).

Boeing and the US government are now demanding that Airbus\'s government subsidies are ceased immediatly or trade sanctions would be put in place in order for Boeing to regain its market lead. While they are demanding Airbus\'s subsidies are ceased, they are refusing to cease the subsidies to Boeing, which the EU has responded with \"fairs fair, we cease and you cease aswell\". This has grown to boiling point at it is about to be taken to the WTO which would heavily damage each countries economy.

Analists in both countries have stated that these demands by Boeing and the US Government are illegal and completely against capitalism. One American business professor was interviewed and stated that because global capitalism is working an a non-american producer is making better and more succesful products forcing an American producer to loose money, the US government is now trying to force the balance of capitalism.

It is worth of note, this is also happening in the engine producers aswell, Pratt and Whitney are demanding that subsidies to Roll Royce aero engines are removed aswell (without their own being removed) as they cannot compete with the latest generation of ultra-powerful and efficient engines being produced by Rolls Royce and Snecma.

So, I open this to the floor, is it right that true capitalism should be stopped just to benefit a losing party who, like many companies were top of the rung but slowed their R&D, only to be overtaken by the competition? Discuss, maturely, not patriotically, and sensibly.....
Thats mainly because we have gave into this. We know that the politicians from either side don't invite us to their meetings. They invite the corporate CEO's to see them because that politician can better them for whatever reason tax breaks, imports/exports, outsourcing; what have you. I'd like to have more choices at the polls. Maybe someone to represent the middle man. How do you guys think we could deal with this? :wall:

[Sgt. Boomer walks into a quite room, leaves a little post and walks out. Comes back later, finds blood carnage and mayhem. He blushes a little with embarrassment, but then thinks “what the heck, it is a war-game sight.”]

isoFlux Wrote:Iraq isn\'t about "freeing the Iraqi people". its an imperialist venture to help secure the most needed natural resource. period. Iraq didn\'t threaten the U.S. More people have died during the US/Coalition invasion and occupation than in Saddam\'s rule. If you think this war is about all that ideological nonsense about "freeing all those poor Iraqi slaves", then open a history book. the US has had a very specific and focused interest in the Middle East since the end of WWII. excluding our support of Zionism, none of our policies, actions, and whatnot have ever supported "freedom in the Middle East". the Middle East is the breadbasket for industrialized countries. it\'s no coincidence that rencent the political amd military actions in Iraq were set forth by oil jockies tightly involved in the Middle East have decided to sacrifice thousands of lives to obtain political, social, and economic control over a cache of resources.

Nazi Germany invaded 9 countries in 1939 (including North Africa). they formed and implemented the most gruesome form of mass genocide known to man, and kept a tight and unwanted grip on all of it\'s territories.

our military actions since WW2 have not been defending and liberating millions of people from a corrupt, destructive, and unjust form of totalitarianism. all they have done is disrupt, polarize, and destory cultures and people for petty political reasons. Korea, Vietnam, Iraq. i dont think all the lives lost for those wars were worth their outcomes. Korea so far is the only pseudo-success story, and even then there are some catches.

And Nazi Germany didn’t directly threaten Britain when it attacked Poland in 1939, nor did it ever invade or directly threaten the US. The US fought the Germans in Europe because they learned from Britain’s example: if you don’t fight them over there, you’ll fight them over here.

It’s easy to look back at WWII and say that it was clearly a case of good and evil. But it wasn’t so black and white at the time. They didn’t have the film footage of Auschwitz and other concentration camps, and many people during the war (including US soldiers) thought the camps were all Allied propaganda. Many socialists at the time (including a future Canadian Prime Minister) denounced “Churchill’s War” as a “racist imperialistic war”. Many Britons, and Americans, felt that fighting the Nazi’s wasn’t worth what it would cost in suffering and wealth, especially in light of WWI.

Britain could have accepted Hitler’s peace offer in 1940, saved its empire, its cities, ? million of its people, and left Europe, Russia, and Europe’s Jews to suffer enslavement and death under the Nazi’s without help or hope of deliverance. And like the millions of dead under communism, we’d never have had film evidence of the mountains of corpses to make the horror of the regime inescapably real.

Does that mean that it was the Allies “job” to save all those people and free Europe from Nazism? No, I don’t believe in entitlement. I don’t believe anyone is entitled to anything, particularly at someone else’s expense. However I do believe in honour; I do believe that some things are morally better than others, and occasionally so much so that they are worth fighting and possibly dying for. Time and the ability to see the whole truth of Nazism proved that WWII was one of those times.

As for Iraq, I think more people died under the UN’s oil for kickbacks sanction scheme that ended with the war. And before that, more people died during Saddam’s war with Iran.

I used to believe in Utopian politics, but unfortunately life is frequently a question of \"which is the lesser of several evils?\". The whole “no blood for oil” schtick was started by the people and governments that were making billions under the UN sanctions.

“May 2003 chart from the American Petroleum Institute web site. The top five crude oil imports from foreign countries to the U.S. breaks down as follows:
17.8% from Saudi Arabia
16.5% from Canada
12.8% from Venezuela
12.0% from Mexico
7.5% from Nigeria”

Yellowbelly Wrote:BS. Iraq was not about a much needed natural resource. If we were that desperate, we would have drilled in Alaska.

Or invaded Canada. I wish you’d invaded Canada, ‘cause we REALY need a regime change up here!!!!!

Actually, in the interest of full disclosure, I should say that I would be willing to fight for Canada if we elected a decent center or center-right regime instead of the bunch of corrupt, Marxist, scumbags that are currently ruining the country. Failing that, in a WWIII type of situation I’d enlist in the US army. I do agree that fighting for an ideal you believe in is better than blind patriotism. I just think it’s na?ve to expect any current event is going to appear as black and white as WWII does 60 years on.

Yes, fighting communism was disruptive, but it was just as evil and dangerous as Nazism. And yes, the way it was fought was often the worst possible strategy - the “dirty little wars” from the 50’s through the 80’s. But what’s a government supposed to do with a expansionist communist enemy that threatens US freedom (including economic freedom), a population that demands jobs and prosperity, and the generation that should fighting for freedom chanting “hell no, we won’t go”?

It was a terrible policy, but infinitely better than letting communism win and the U.S. (& Europe) wither into 3rd world countries and eventually be overrun.
What really kills me about the left is that for years they’ve been whining about US support of dictators, but now that a government is attempting to reverse that policy, they’re even more upset!!!! And while Korea is far from perfect, compared to North Korea it’s a bloody paradise.

I don’t agree that the US’s reasons were about oil. The opposition from the UN, France, Canada, Russia, several politicians and journalists who were getting kickbacks bribes and contracts from the Saddam regime – THAT was about oil. Whether it was the right thing is another question. But it was probably better than doing nothing and waiting for their next attack. You know – the best defense is a good offence.

Put it another way: CAMPING DOESN’T WORK! AND THE US AINT CAMPERS.

=D.C.L.I=TuRb0jUg3nD Wrote:"During the administration of William Jefferson Clinton, the U.S. enjoyed more peace and economic well being than at any time in its history. …

I would imagine they had their facts straight! But anyhoo, I was flaunting the unprecendented economical statistics of 8 years of largely minding own bidniss.

Yup, Clinton and Chamberlain, two masters at giving the world peace in their time. And while Clinton does get full marks for not screwing up the economic boom, the boom itself was caused by free trade and the personal computer, not Clinton.

=D.C.L.I=TuRb0jUg3nD Wrote:It is the motives behind and the arrogant refusal to cooperate with the rest of the world in ousting him (you know: with minimal bloodshed – yeah, we wussie euros are strangely weird that way), that bugs us.

Well, my guess is the main motives for snubbing the UN were:
1. they wanted to keep the “oil for fraud” scheme going forever and would have stalled the US forever.
2. to drive a steak through the heart of the global governance movement (the new face of Marxist Utopian politics).

=D.C.L.I=TuRb0jUg3nD Wrote:Oh, and the UN were founded to ensure that we never would see a war like WW2 again, through diplomacy, communication and understanding.

Exactly like founding the League of Nations after WWI to prevent … er, never mind. I think the bomb did a better job of keeping the peace than the UN.8)

P.S. good debate guys, and sorry for the long post. Cheers, Boomer.

This question has been raised throughout the world in response to \"Der Untergang\", the German movie that shows the last days of the Reich, and tries to captivate a true-to-life perspective of the events in the bunkers underneath Berlin.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the destruction of Hiroshima by a nuclear bomb.

2005 also marks the 20th anniversary of the bombing of our flagship, the first Rainbow Warrior, by agents of the French government in Auckland Harbour, New Zealand. The ship had been preparing a campaign against French nuclear weapons testing.

The threat of a nuclear weapon actually being used is today perhaps greater than ever. Nuclear warheads lie in insecure warehouses in Russia, weapons grade plutonium transits the planet, and nuclear power plants keep the deadly fuel cycle which feeds weapons systems alive. George Bush openly talks about plans for smaller, \"more usable\" nuclear weapons. For violent extremists of every ilk, a nuclear weapon is the ultimate prize.
We\'re looking for people who want to carry on the campaign against nuclear weapons and help us mark the 20th anniversary of the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior with renewed action against these dangerous circumstances.

i\'m sure many people know and realize this, but it may not be as public as i would like it to be. this isnt really a debatable thread, but here it is anyways. to everybody, inside and outside the US, whether you voted for Bush or not, just realize that this was by far NOT a landslide victory. the US is a divided country, and even though Bush got the slim majority, just under half of us did not want this and fought against this happening.

anyways, just thought i\'d like to point this out, though many other people have
