You have to remember that many Americans were against joining the war in Europe at all. We had no beef with Germany or Italy. Most Americans just wanted to to fight the Japanese for their attack on us. It was Hitler who declared war on the United States after Japan attacked the US. Hitler was obviously hoping that Japan would in turn declare war on the Russia. Russia would have had to fight a 2 front war. The Japanese feared the Russians though after the breif Russo-Japanese war.
